Does my child need to know how to ski to join?
Yes. They do not have to be a skilled or practiced skier, however we do ask that all participants are able to control their speed, stop for safety purposes, and be confident enough to ski without help. Skiers who do not meet this criteria above will require a parent to accompany them on the hill until they do.

What is the cost?
Registration is free. Skis are provided at no cost to team members with their commitment to participate all season. A Lutsen Mountains ski pass (Lutsen.com) is required for each kid and for parents who are helping on the hill.
What kind of equipment is needed?
Lutsen Mountains provides free rental skis to all team members. Attend the Info meeting November 25 at the Chalet (5:00) and a fitting session at the rental shop (5:30), registering for the team, and participating through the season, are all required to get skis. Once your child progresses, you may choose to upgrade to your own. Helmet, ski boots/poles, and quality winter gear are a family’s responsibility. There are opportunities to sell & swap equipment with other ski families as kids outgrow and need new gear, including at our Team Gear Swap at 4:30 on Nov. 25 or on the Lutsen Alpine Ski Team Sell and Swap Facebook group.
When are practices?
Practices are usually Tuesday and Friday evenings from 4:00-6pm, December through early March. The start of practices depends on when Ullr (the run we practice on) opens for the season. WE HOST the Championships at Lutsen Mountains this year to end the season March 8, 2026.
When and where are races?
Lutsen takes part in the Northland Junior Race Series (NJRS). Races are on Sundays (mostly) from January through the seconds weekend in March. Race venues include Lutsen Mountains, Spirit Mountain, Mont Du Lac, Giant's Ridge, Detroit Mountain, and Mount Ski Gull. Race regulations, race format, and more information can be found on the NJRS website.
Do we have to attend all races?
Your child is not required to race at all, especially as they are learning and gaining confidence, but they are encouraged to participate in the ski racing experience when they are ready. Lutsen Junior Alpine is proud to be the development team for the competitive and successful Cook County High School Alpine Race team. Note that if skiers want to be eligible to place in the final championship race, they will need to participate in at least 3 races.
Is there ride sharing available?
If you are willing to ride-share and/or need help getting your kids to practices, indicate that when you register. We help to connect those families needing rides with those families with extra seats in their vehicles by sending out a survey at the beginning of the school year. Many families ride share from the schools.
